FIRES.

EIGHT-ROOMED DWELLING DESTROYED. _An eight-roomed two-storied house, situated at No. 12 Guilford Terrace, was practically destroyed by _firo on Saturday afternoon. The brigade received the call at 3.10 p.m. and were quickly on tho scene, but the fire, which originated in .the kitchen, had a good hold, and the lower portion was burnt right out and the top story considerably damaged by heat and water. Very few of the contents were saved; The'occupier of the house, Mrs. Charlotte Campbell, had the contents insured in the' Sun Olfico for £200. 'Hie building, which was owned by the Sisters of Mercy Convent, was insured in the United Insurance Office for JCGOO. Yesterday afternoon tho fire hrigado received a call to suppress an incipient fire'in-a small grocery shop, 153 Taranaki Street, occupied by Claude Browno. The fire was arrested in its early stages, however, and the damage to the counter and accessories amounted lo only a few pounds. RESTAURANT ON FIRE. Whilst on duty in Manners Street at about 11.30 last night, Sergeant Taylor saw a flickering light through tho window of tho Tiffin restaurant, next to Mr. George Winder's buildings. At first he thought it was merely tho reflection of a fire in a grate, but further investigation diclosed the fact that ,tho building was on fire. The sergeant promptly rang up the Central Fire Brigade from tho Manners Street Police Station. When the brigade arrived and forced their way into the building, they discovered the back wall of tho diningroom ablaze. The fire had a good hold, but with the aid of two chemical extinguishers was soon got undor control.

The Tiffin is a two-storied, wooden building, "occupied by Mrs, Lee, nnd owned by Mr. George Wiudor. Had it not been for tho promptness of Sergeant Taylor in getting in touch with the brigade a most serious lire must have resulted.
