Cutton, S.JI., held an inquest on tho body of Krnost Austin, an engineer, who was found injured in tho hold of the steamer Makarini. and died in the' Hospital yesterday and returned a verdict of death ! from fracturo of tho baso of tho skull, resulting in ccrcbal haemorrhage. Tho corner added a rider that thero was no evidence, to show tho cause of death or the reason deceased was in that part of tho vessel. Evidenco was submitted to show that Austin had received instructions to do somo work in tho engincroom, and no ono saw him after that timo until a'watersido lifting tho hatches of the hold; discovered him lying in an in. sensible condition about 30 feet below. Several of, the officers of the Makarini accompanied tho remains to the grave this morliiiig. SUICIDE BY HANGING. ~ }l .Christchureh, July 4. An inquest was held at Lyttclton this afternoon touching tho death of William Bootland, who was found hanging from a tree over an old quarry on the hilltops near Rapaki yesterday afternoon. Tho Coroner returned a verdict that tho man committed suicido by hanging. PAINTER SERIOUSLY INJURED. Auckland,, July 4. A painter named Frederick Lewis, a married man, was cleaning the outsido walls of the residenco of Mr. A. M. Myers, M.P., when a thin bar across tho window, to which ho was holding, gavo way. Ho fell 15 feet, and sustainod a fracturo of tho baso of tho skull, a fractured leg, and other injuries. Tho hospital authorities entertain hopes of his recovery. OLD -ALAN'S SUDDEN DEATH. Dunsdln, July 4. James Bonnetts, aged 82, a farmer at Lovells Flat, died suddenly yesterday. It is believed heart failuro was tho cause of death. FOOTBALLER BREAKS A LEG. Auckland, July 5. A fourth grade player named W. Cowdry had his leg broken on Saturday.
