NEW MOTOR TRAIN
IN COMMISSION YESTERDAY
•- The new petrol motor train with which the Government Railway Department is experimenting with was placed in com- * mission on tlio railway lino between Wellington and Johnsonville yesterday, and during the day made two return trips between tlio stations mentioned, carrying a fair number of passengers on each trip. Probably when the people .have got used to "the motor-car on rails"_ and beconio better acquainted with its time-table the patronage will improve. Those, who did make the journey at 11 a.m., including Mr. C. 0. Crump (the Mayor of Onslow) were quite satisfied that the motor train would become popular. The car, which is nicely finished iii green carriage paint contains two apartments capable of accommodating 18 passengers, fitted and upholstered after the manner.of a first-class suburban railway . carriage, and is lighted with gas from a cylinder in the ordinary way. At either end thero is a compartment for the motorman, yesterday represented by P. Robinson, while H. Wainscott acted as guard. The trip between the Thorndon Station and Johnsonville is scheduled to take half an hour, which is the same time allowed ordinary suburban trains
For the present the motor train is only to make two trips a day on weolc days and one on Sundays. On week days the time-table will be as follows: Leave Thorndon, 11 a.m. and 8.30 p.m.; leave Johnsonville, 12.35 p.m. and 9.5 p.m. On Sunday the motor train will leave Wellington at 5.42 p.m., and Johnsonville at , 6.45 p.m. The service is an extra one, and maintenance will depend on how well the car is patronised.
