BURGLARS AT WORK

. PRIVATE HOUSES ENTERED AND ■ / RANSACKED THREE CASES IN THE CITY Three burglaries have come under tho notice of the Police within the last week. Oil' Sunday night the residence of the Rov. Win. ltaine, senior curate of St.' Peter's Church, in Nairn Street, was broken into, and a quantity of money and jewellery stolen. Mr. and Mrs. R-aine left the house at 6.30 o'clock and on returning from church two hours later found that two gates and the front door had been opened during their absence, whilst one of the windows had been raised a foot or two. An examination revealed the fact that every room in tho house had been ransacked, and that tho whole of Mrs. Raine's jewelloryj with the exception of two or three, articles, was missing, together with some money. Tho missing jewellery is valued at £60. In broad daylight; on _ Friday afternoon last, No. 118 Austin Street was v!6itod by a burglar,- whilst tho occupants were out. On returning homo in . the ;ovening the occupiers of the houso found that every room in the place had been ransacked, and a quantity. of jewellery and money were missing. Judging by the appearance of the place after the thief's visit, the 'work was not that of a professional.

Recently the residence of the Rov. A.* T. Braiusby (minister of the Vivian Street ,Baptist Church) in St. John Street (at the top of Abel Smith Street) was entered whilst the occupants were on a visit to Dunedin. It is reported that two gold watches were taken, together with a' money-box and the contents of a mission collecting-box. Entrance was obtained through the din-ing-room window, tlio catch of which had been forced.
