HINDUS AT VANCOUVER
NEWSPAPER RUMOUR. OF PRESSURE BROUGHT TO BEAR. By Teleeraph—Press Association—Copyrleht Vancouver, Juno. 24. Tho "World's" Ottawa correspondent alleges that as the result of pressure brought to bear on the Canadian Gov. crnnient by tho Imperial authorities, the difficulties in the way of dealing with tho Hindu immigrants' situation will bo overcome. It is understood that the present Court proceedings will bo allowed to interpret the exclusion regulations. If the Court proceedings give tho Hindus the right to temporarily entor Canada, the Government will not take stops to prevent it, but will take action in conjunction with tho British 1 Government to devise diplomatic means I of reaching a permanent solution of tho whole question of the restriction of Asiatic immigration. Tho local immigration officials emphatically deny the statement of the "World's" correspondent. It is alleged here that instead of a writ of mandamus, the Supremo, Court will ho asked for a writ of habeas corpus to test the Order-in-Council restricting immigration to those immigrants who do not come from the land ot their nativity direct. The issue will be vital, and will be fought to a finish. ■ ■ Counsel have agreed to accept a pro forma dismissal of the application at the hands Of Judge Murphy, thus enabling the matter to be brought to the Court of Appeals of British Columbia before the end of tho month. 'Whichever way the Court of Appeals decides the unsuccessful party is .likely to Appeal to tho Supreme Court of CanMeantime, tlie Hindus are likely to remain aboard the Komagata Maru. SPECIFIC~DENIAL. DY IMMIGRATION. OFFICIALS, (lice. June 25, 11.5 p.niS.) Ottawa, June 54. A specific denial is given in Government circles' to the' story in llio Liberal I'rcss that Cabinet had decided to nilow the Hindus on the Komagata >'»r.j to land, owing to pressure by the hiinslt authorities. Officials of the Immigration lApartment arc equally emphatic ; n ucc'iwing that every possible effort will, be irado to prevent the Hindus from landing. Tho Government, they say, las git en instructions to tho Immigration li.spec*o'- at Vancouver to strictly cutoice Immigration Regulations. MEETINC OF PROTEST. UNALTERABLE OPPOSITION. Vanoouuer, June.24. Citizens at a public meeting emphatically expressed unalterable opposition to Oriental immigration, and passed a resolution strongly urging on the Dominion Government tho necessity of supporting the efforts the immigration authorities have undertaken towards tho rejection of tho immigrants aboard tho steamer Komagata- Maru, the' immediate deportation of those immigrants, and that stringent legislation be enacted .by which such immigrants shall bo entirely restricted from admission to tho Dominion. . ,
