GOVERNMENT MESSENGERS

The- annual reunion of, Government messengers, retired messengers and night watchmen was held in Godber's rooms, CJourtenay Place, last night. Mr. A. Death, chief messenger at the Govern- . Eieflt' Buildings, presided. Apologies wet© received from the Prime Minister and Captain Hennah, Inspector of Messenger Staffs throughout the Dominion. The Hon. H. D. Bell, Minister of Internal Affairs, and Mr. J, Hislop, UnderSecretary, were among the guests. Tho Hon. H. D. Bell, responding to tlio toast of Parliament, said that when he re-entered Parliament two years ago the question of how to deal with some of tho-very old and faithful servants of Parliament and of Ministers became a very serious one. Ministers discussed the. matter in private a great deal, but it was not until the Public Service Commissioner put forwart| a proposal that it, was possible to malso tho arrangements which had been macle, and which ho hoped had been satisfactory.' , (Hear, hear.) He would liot have' mentioned the matter except that he wished to say what was fair to the. Public Servico Commissioner. He hoped that there would always be before tho messenger staffs something more than mere superannuation. (Hear, hear.) He hoped also that whatever Government might he in power the messengers would always be treated '-with'fairness and consideration, and that tho messengers in their turn would continue to give that loyal service they had always given in the past.
