REV. JOSHUA JONES

FAREWELLED AT LOWER HUTT. St. James's Hall, Lower Hutt, was crowded last evening, wheii the parishioners of St. James's Anglican ■ Church assembled to bid farewell to the Rev. Joshua Jones, late vicar, who has retired from active work. Tho Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott) was among those present, ancf the gathering also included other Anglican clergy and several I'etone residents. A musical programme was -contributed by Mrs. Wilson, tho Misses Harle and Clere, and Messrs. Wray and Hill. ' ' During the course of'the evening Mr. D. M. Yeats (churchwarden), on behalf of tho parishioners, presented Mr. Jones with an address, the text of which was as follows:— Dear Mr. Jones,—The parishioners of St. James's Church, Lower ' Hutt, some of those ministered to at I'etone, and other frionds, have met here this evening to wish you Godspeed, and to hope -that you may enjoy a long' and happy rest after the labours of so many years. * • You havo fought a long and strenuous fight, and can look back upon 47 years of' faithful servico to the Church, 28 of which you have spent. in this parish. .A, parting of this kind must naturally be painful to .- all concerned, but a consolation to : you and to us, is that you are going to have a well-earned rest, and wo hope that as you are not going- far away, we shall have the pleasure of seeing you and yours on many occasions amongst.us in the days to come. Our high appreciation of your long and valuable services here has been placed on the parish rgcords, and been endorsed by St. James's parishioners at their last general, meeting. We feel that tho best evidehco of the esteem in which you are held has been the hearty response to the suggestion that some offering should bo made to you and yours . prior to your departure.. That offering is contained in the pocket-book which we now ask you, on behalf of :the parishioners, the 'old parish- ' ioncrs of Pctone. and other outside friends who have joined with them —to accept as a token of the very high esteem in which you are held, and of the very best wishes for the ■future welfare of your family and yourself. , On behalf of the donors—D.M. Yeats, Churchwarden. , Dr. Sprotfc also made very complimentary reference.to Mr. Jones and his work. His Lordship stated that Mr. Jones was one of his oldest and closest friends in New Zealand. For 22 years ho had proved to bo a friend who was neither fickle nor changeable. _ The speaker also referred to the late vicar's educational attainments, not only in connection with his calling, but in ancient and modern history. And he added that Mr. Jones had-always been ready and willing to give advice from his vast knowledge when requested. Mr. Jones, who was warmly received, briefly. outlined his career at Hutt. from the time of the little schoolroom in which a few members had met in tho early days, up till tho present. He thanked those present heartily for their support, and also for tho token of esteem which they had given him. He would always look back upon tho time that ho had spent in the Hutt as a very pleasant time indeed.
