SUNDAY'S TAXI-CAR EPISODE.
TAXI-DRIVER'S VERSION. Tho Christchurch.polico 'are searching for the young'man'or young men responsible for. Sunday's taxi-cab episode, in'which a girl of fifteen was said to have been turned out of-a. car,, drunk, on Rolleston Avenue. The car' concerned was driven by James Salt, a licensed driver. His'explanation''of the ejection tho girl into tho street, says the "Star," is:.that she became,bad on tho way home,' and it.was intended to drive her to tho " hospital. In-- Rolleston Avenue a gentleman stopped the car to see what the row was'about, and, on.ascertaining tho state of affairs, took tho girl into a; house' close by and rang up. for the police. Tho- motor-car -was: found to contain hair combs, hair ribbons, and othcr'eyideiice of disorder! It is stated that the police havo been informed at what hotel tho liquor was procured on Sunday. .■■ Salt says that ho kiicw the .two girls slightly. About /'l,p.m. on Sunday-ono of them came to him alid said that if ho would drive around to Hereford Street there was .a job waiting for him. Ho went there, 'and found tho: other girl and a man whom-he'did-not.know.-Tho party said they wanted to bo driven to Now Brighton. They had hardly started when they changed their mjnds, and said'they would go to Kaiapoi. They went to tho hotel whore the man was staying, got his overcoat, and drove to Kaiapoi. ' Tho'y had tea at tho Mandeyillo Hotol there, and,.after staying a few minutes longer, set off for home; Salt says that on tho way home' the elder girl got into the front of the car with him. On the way back they called at Salt's aunt's. Hoifso, where they stayed for about a quarter of an hour. They started again, and when at Pap'amii the girl began to scream. Salt turned round and asked what the matter was, saying that "that Was no good to him." '. Ho says that every time the gir' .was asked anything she- screamed. . At the Carlton Hotel corner she com< menced screaming again, and Salt said that he would take her straight to tho hospital. When in Rolleston Avenue some young follows were standing in the road, and'one nf them jumped on to. tho footboard of the ear. Salt pulled up, and his three passengers got out. Two women came out of a house near by, and asked what was wrong with the girl. Salt said tlmt he thought she was in hysterics, and he was taking her to the hospital. They said they would look alter her, and the man and the girl walked oft'. \ ' (After waiting awhile, Salt drove the second girl homo, nnd then went to the Excelsior Hotel to find the man, as he had not been paid his hire.
