Baldwin, a prominent Manawatu sportsman, left lor England, via Sydney, last evening. His n arc, Bradainaiite (Charlemagne ll—Hamattanj, has been retired from -the turf, and is to visit the imported horse Hallowmas. A rumour was freely circulated, in Christehurch on Tuesday that The Spaniard had'dropped dead on the previous day. Mr. Armstrong's veteran 'chaser showed thai lie is still very much alivo by following Exotic home in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase on Wednesday. • It is said that Captain Jack has never been known to fail/ He was ridden to hounds for" several, seasons, and occasionally carried a lady. He is also not altogether a stranger to the collar, and has been through the duties of carting hay* ploughing, and sledging. Gondolier broke down badly in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase, and..is unlikely to race again. The ranks of the 'chasers look like .being very thin by the: timo the Nationals roll round: The Spaniard was knooked out after racing at Hastings, and he is an unlikely starter at Napier or Trentham. Silver King, the horse with the big reputation in Hastings, changed hands on Monday last, and is now owned by Mr. E. Luttrell. Probably Silver Kingwill go to Sydney.and join ft. j. Mason's .teani. There is no doubt that Peary is a much improved horse for his race at Ellerslie, and if started at Napier next week- the Birkenhead gelding will be jus£ as good.a favourite as he was at Hastings. • Daylight Bill, who won the Woodlands Hack Steeplechase at the Hawko's Bay Winter -Meeting, has started several times over country before, but prior to his victory on Wednesday never managed to complete the couipc. One or two , Australian' studmasters liave been trying to buy Czarcvna, the dam of Anna Carlovna, lately; but her owner will not put a price on her. Sbo is in foal to Boniform this season, and has a. foal at foot bv Martian, i It is rumoured that F. E. Jones has been engaged as.first horseman to the Ohokcbore'Lodge'team for next season. Jones' rode very successfully for the same etable. before. Glen Nevis, the third horse in tho Second Hack Hurdles ?.;.Hastings, was only beaten for second place by a very narrow margin. Had he won. be would have yielded a return in the region <.f a century-. Glen Novis is b.y Sweet Simon, who did not get many cpnd opportunities at the stud from Satellite, dam of Kuroki and D'Nil, two good winners. Glen Nevis is sure to be heard uf a^ain. Unless the tail is a long one. it dors not look as if there will be a very big field in the '.Napier Steeplechase next week, Kailroa has been allowed 71b. for the defeat registered against him by Exotic in the June Steeples, and if the pair go to the post the contest between them should be interesting. After fulfilling engagements at the Napier Park meeting next week, F. W. M'Cube will go to Melbourne to ride tho top weight, Obi, '-n the V.li.C. Grand National Hurdle I?ace, on July 11. Ho is returning' at ence, and will ho back in time for the IVontham meeting. It is quite likelv thta tho Hastings horseman, Jerry O'C'onncll, may not rideagain until the"Trentham meeting. His spine is slightly hurt, and O'Connell is anxious to give himself every clianeo to get well It is said that the Auckland ftacing Club will mako all its hack races north '>')0 sovs. at future meetings at Ellerslie. The Great-Mogul was very sore after racing in the Herelaungn Handicap at Hastings,, and he was unable to start on the second day of the meeting.
