"STOP THIEF!"
BICYCLE STEALER CAUGHT. (By Telegraph— Press Association.) Christohurch, Juno 18. Is it not often that a bicycle thief is caught in the act, but, according to a story told by Senior Sergeant Mathieson, in tho Magistrate's Court this afternoon, the city furnished such a case on Tuesday evening last. To-day Wilhelm Knab appeared before Mr. li. W. Bishop, S.M., on a charge that ho had stolen a bicycle, valued at £7, the •property of Harry Leigh. The Senior Sergeant said that Leigh had" left his bicycle outside a suburban store, but, a few minutes later, a noise outside warned him that the machine was being removed. A chase ensued, and tho thief was caught, but. while the police were being sent for, the man grew desperate, assaulted his captor, and escaped. Later, however, Constable J. P. Ryan arrested him.. Accused said that ho had been drinking, and was not responsible for his actions. The Magistrate, in inflicting a fine of £5, remarked that, even were that statement true, it was no excuse for stealing tho bicycle.
