THE BEEF TRUST.
BANK OF N.Z. CHAIRMAN'S VIEWS. A great deal of perturbation lias been occasioned by the persistent rumours that the American Beef Trust has secured a footing in this Dominion, said Mr. Harold Beauchainp tlio course of his revioiv at tho annual meeting of tho Bank of New Zealand yesterday. It is we'll known, Mr. Bcauchamp added, tjiat two powerful American linns, associated with the recently dissolved organisation known as tho National Tacking Company, have been operating in New. Zealand. These corporations command immenso financial resources, and wliilo they confino themsclvos to buying meat for export in the usual way, their admit in tho Dominion will not occasion us any concern. Should they seek to extend their operations and to secure a monopoly of tho meat trade here, tlioro is no doubt the Now Zealand Government would take tlio matter in band and, if necessary, legislate to prevent li repetition, in this Dominion, of the tfiotics which tho combination is understood to have pursued elsowliere. Tho matter may bo left witli confidence in tho hands of tho Government, who, there is roason to think, are keeping a watchful eye 011 the movements of the companies' representatives.
