WELSHING AT HURST PARK.

By Telegraph—Press Association—CoD'/richt London, June 4. It is alleged that welshing was rampant at the Hurst Kirk races. One bookmaker distributed handbills nnnouncing himself as a former chorister in the private- chapel at Windsor, nnd that he had sung at tho wedding of Kiupr Edward.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

ttlY GtiENCOE.] Balboa was not engaged in any of tho big two-year-old events this year, but he figures amongst tho entrants for the Great Northern Guineas, Great Northern Derby, and New Zealand Derby. He will,' therefore', hayo>ampjo opportunity to distinguish himself in class as a three-yoar-old. Grand Slam has-been put in commiseion again. Claridgo picked up five or six races with Tho Possible's son three seasons ago, but tho gelding is Retting up in years now. Peg burst a foot somp little time back and had to bo given a rest. Hor form at Ashburton and Oamaru suggested that she would 6oon be in racing trim, and as sho was going on nicely, thero was a disposition to support her for tho Birthday Handicap at Dunedin. The old trouble mado its reappearance, however, and so it was decided to cancel the Dunedin, engagement. ' Stardancer is not likely to do any more racing. Mr. Dalgety will send her to be mated with the Desmond horse Demosthenes,

G. Price was aboard the Mooraki, bound for Sydney, last evening. He has gone across to confer with tho lady who races as "Mr. Highden," and who is now residing in Sydney for the winter, as to whether Pariform is to bo prepared for the A.J.C. .Derby. It is quite possible that "Mr. Highden" may like to have a horse or two racing in Sydney, and with-.'that end in view Prico has nominated Expect for the Epsom and Metropolitan . Handicaps. Pariform is at present spelling, but he is hot off hard feed. His only work is an occasional jog round the back roads of Palraerston North. There is to bo a big weeding out at tho Highden stables. Dronzo has already gone, and Ermengardo and Mouetto are both to bo thrown out, and will visit, tho imported horse Hallownlas, whose list, by tho way, is already full. Ermengarde has developed soreness, hence her retirement. Mouotto is affected in tho wind. Mr. P. E. Baldwin, owner of Bradarnante, is leaving for a trip to England next weelf. He has decided to retire his filly from the turf, and sho has been booked to visit Hallowmas.. Tho Palmcrston North sportsman motored out to 6ce tho imported horse during tho progress of the last Wanganui meeting, and he was greatly taken-with him. . Ruffy and Peary are the two favourites locally for tho Groat Northorn Steeples, to bo run to-day. By running third in tho Grand National Hurdles on Wednesday ,rrtliQ;fßimer has .gained many friends, to Sol has already won over the coitreo ho must bo hard to defeat. Still Peary cannot be left • out of calculations. Hcallyspeaking,'Rtiffy'B third place in tho big hurdles should draw attention to Peary's chances, for when Ruffy was racing in hack hurdles on tho West Coast it would havo required a considerable poundago on Peary to bring him back to Ruffy. . C. Emerson loft on a holiday trip to Sydney yesterday. Ho is not going, as was generally supposed, to' rido Mr. G. D. .'Greenwood's horsee in Sydney, and will probably content himself with riding oxerciso alone, not doing any public riding until next season. EmeTson attained his 20th birthday on Thursday last, and celebrated it by nding three- successive winners at Otaki. For tho first time during his racing career, Mr.' W. E. Bidwill. of Rototawai, will havo a couple of four-year-olds to represent him next season. These will bo Submersion, tho best of whom has certainly not yet been seen, and Vocation, a- very useful horse. The latter was to bo gelded, but latest advices state that tie operation will not be performed. The rising three-year-old Reputation i 3 furnishing a lot, but ho will never'bo very big. Hβ does not strike one as a Derby colt, though probably ho is now. as big as Elevation was at tho samo age, and the latter's deeds as a three-yoar-old are woll known.

George, winner of the Scurry at Otaki, seems to liavo a will of hie own. At tho start of tho race he ran clean off the course from the middle of the field, and took several of the other runners with him. His rider, B. Deeley, brought him back again, and lie was favoured with a. lucky run on tbo rails. When Tiora fell, several of tho other runners had to go round her, and this allowed George to reach tho front, where lie remained till tho post was. reached. Tho Field Battery horse is a very goodlookinw animal, and if he wero gelded it would detract, from his appearance, but would probably save him from bocoming a rogue. The Winter Meeting of tho Auckland Racing Club .will be advanced a further stago to-day, when amongst other events tho Great Northern Steeplechase will bo decided. Ruatangata, winner of the Maiiden Hurdles, may be ecen in a favourable light in the Orakci Hurdles, and so may Admiral Soult, who fell on the first day when well fancied.

Avon Park, a dual wiairor at Egmont, may encounter most opposition in tho Ranfurly Welter to-day from Mon Athol, on whom Deeley will havo the mount. This horse was well supported in tho Jervois Handicap, but he_ was probably in want of a race. In tho Reimiora Hurdles' thero is only a. stone between tho six acceptors. The Karamu candidate, Idealism, ran a good raco for two miles in the Great Northern Hurdles, and niayho the public will make liim favourite at Ellorslio 'today. A. Oliver has gone north to ride Crown Pearl in he Prince of Wales Handicap this afternoon. The race will bo run over Crown Pearl's favourite distance, soven furlongs. Outside of him Haskayne and Bluestono may be preferred. Tho latter finished at a groat rato in the Members' Handicap, five furlongs, run on tho opening day. Ngatirimnui has been doing as good track work at Kllorslio as any horse racing there. This may causo tho St. Paul liorso to go out a very strong favourito in tho Jumpers' Flat Handicap this afternoon. Master Lupin will no doubt bo favourito in tho Ladies' Bracelet.
