OTAKI R.C. WINTER RACES CONCLUDINQ DAY. HANDICAP WON BY PASSADENA. 'The Otaki Maori ltaoing Club's Winter Meeting was concluded yesterday 'in delijjnuul weather, and for an outlay tiiuro was a large attendance. Speculation on tiio Unulisator was again brisk, aud during the aay just on ti4,OUU was hanuled. Tho total for the two days was over X3S,WJ, as comparod with i3U,5y4 for tno \v in tor ivieetuig last year, TJio grounds had improved consiuerably sinuo tno opening clay, but the going on the racing track was still holding. Several falls occurred in' different races, but tortunatcly none was attended with any serious result. On account of his behiviour towards one of tho cjub's officials, H. Woiland (owner of The Great lUogul) was hailed before the stewards during the afternoon and fined £10. ■ . . \_ „ Ngarua was strong favourite in tho Telegraph Hack Handicap, with Calais second in demand. The favourite was riot the first to jump away.froiri'the barrier, but he was always-in. a good position, aud coming round the home bend ho drew to the front. Onco in tho straight tho raco was all over, for Ngarua went on to win easily by four lengths from Master Achilles (a halfbrother to Motoa).
Grit Lawless, ivlib fell during tho running of the Steeplechase on the first day, was withdrawn from yesterday's cross-country event. Merrio Lad, with I'. -Flynn in the saddle, was made favourite, and after appearing to bo beaten lialf a niilo from lkmie, ho came on again and won. To WJiotu, the first day's winner, was a long way behind tho leaders at ono stage, but he finished fast and gained second place, with' Passive a poor third. Exotic again shaped badly, and never looked' a likely winner. Bonny (St. Morn) sot out to make the pace from the start, and gave a beautiful display of fencing. Coming to the last obstacle, he;apt>ear-cd-'ti> havo tho race in liis keeping, but ho struck heavily, and' after latiduig rolled over on his jockey. Both horse and rider lay in a heap.fo - a few minutes, the jockey ' being pinned under his mount. Ayro was unconscious when extrisated, but ho recovered soon after, and w : as found to have escaped with .'a severs shaking. The horse was not injured. \ . ■ ■ -\ ' Pavlova was tho only one of the acceptors that did hot go to the post in the Huia Handicap. Lady Louisa', who was ,ah, easy winner at a mile in the raoc for the Cup. on Wednesday,'was made a pronounced favourite, and was most unfortunate to bo beaten. Deeley had tho Campfire maro in a good posi-tion-behind' the leaders in the early stages of the race, but she received a severe bump at a critical juncture, and was sent back to the extreme rear' of the-: field. Sho came with a. great run in the straight,' but though, she was finishing faster than any of the other candidates, she had to ho content with third position. Passadena, .the winner, was tho third horse from A. J.- Shcarsby'&stable to he successful at the meeting. The other, two >were "Makara (on tho first day) and Ngarua" ' . ■ ■'■' - Tho', Blenheim'-traincd ./'Ruination scored'an easy victory in the Stewards' Hack Handicap. Emerson got'her away from the barrier quickly, and, ridden a, nice, patient race in front, lie managed, to last long, enough to win by half a longth from the consistent Merrio Gain.' Tho favptiritOj'Squaro Deal,- was ..novcr, ivell, placed, ahd'Was no'nearer than eov'onth when tho judge's licrx was reached. Ilatiniakalsa. good raco until the straight .'■' was reached, but'.hb,tircd'overitho-last fur-long,-and was;beaten..oiit of .a. place.' ..,. ilount Victoria, who hadebcen favour-' ito/in the open six-furlong race on tho first day, was not nearly so well supported in tho Railway Handicap yesterday,' the public making Listen favoliritry !'TJio latter got away from the harrier well enough, but at. the business end of the journey she was not on hand. Mount Victoria and Amber and White i mado most of tho running, and they were joined at tho straight entrance Ineuru and Black Lupin. Amber and "White quickly compounded, but a fino finish took placo between the other three. Ineuru, after taking the lead l inside the distanco, tired, and Emerson, riding vigorously on Mount Victoria, won by a neck. Tin's event w;as full of .incident. Mowbray bolted before.' the J start, and galloped once round before being pulled up, and 'during* the running of tho raco Lady Louisa lost her rider, owing to the saddle slipping. Tho maro was. running her second race during tho day,- but sho was not too tired to givo a display of buekjiimping and two or throe of the candidates behind her. had to bo pulled up. .-''' C. Emerson already two winners in succession,.and ho also rode Pursefiller to victory in! tho .nest race, in which Amity, 'the favourite, could only finish third. In tho last raco of tho day "Emerson's mount finished in second position.
The scratching pen reduced tho Held in the concluding event to thirteen runricrs:' George,, who had run second to Hauraakaka on tho opening day, was favourite, but Tiroa (a' half-sister" to Ineuru) was.also well supported/ At thn start, Goorgo lost a Jot of ground,] and, when half the distance- had been covered, ho appeared to bo hopelessly placed. At that timo Tiora was bowling along several lengths ahead of her field. Rounding the homo bend, Tiora slipped and fell. Tho candidates immediately following her ran very wide, with tho result that'Georgo got through on tho inside, and was quickly in front. Ho finished full of funning, and won rather comfortably at the finish. RESULTS, TELEGRAPH HACK HANDICAP, of 120 sovs. I'ivo furlongs. 1 Afr. A.'J. Shearsby'a I>. g.
