TEACHING THE OATH
A bay carter called as a witness at Stratford (England) not long ago wastold to repeat tho words of the oath after tho cleric. Instead ho said, "That's right." 'J'ho Clerk: Repeat'it. Tho witness: Repeat it. Tho Clerk: "That tho ovidenco I give shall bo the truth " Tho witness: It will, and nothing but tho truth. The Clerk: Repeat what I say. Tho witness: I am no scholar, you know. (Laughter.) The Clerk: We can appreciate that. Just say "shall be tlio truth and " Tho witness did so. The Clerk; Say "nothing." The witness: All right. (Laughter.) The Clerk: Say "nothing but the truth."—Yes. . Can't you say "nothing but the truth"?— Yes. (Laughter.) The Clerk: Well, do so. The witness repeated the words, and hi.s evidence ,w:\s tiikeu.
