FIRES.
THE BLAZE AT MIRAJIAR. Tlio accidental upsetting of an oiliaiup was responsible for the fire which destroyed a six-roomed house owned by Mr. \Y. rait, and occupied by Mr. F lurnbull,- at Miramar, on Monday evening Shortly after 5 p.m. Mrs lurnbull was carrying a lamp from one room to another, when sho stumbled letting tho lamp fall; There was a burst of flames immediately, and Mrs. lurn.bull.iust managed to escapo in' time. Tho Miramar Volunteer Fire Bngado (under' Foreman Mildonhall) was smartly on tho scene, but was considerably handicapped at first by tho absence of water. This was available later, and the 'brigade was then able to save an adjoining four-roomed house which was in danger of being destroyed lwo firemen— J. Mann and J. Harris— were iniurotl through a chimney falling fin them. Dr. Edith Huntley, who is a resident of the suburb, attended to the cases. Residents speak highly of tho work of the brigade, which was considered very, creditable,, when the exposed position of the housos and tho galo of wind aro taken into consideration. t>io rn_ii_tents of tho hoiiso were insured for £/o. and there was also a separate policy on tho piano.- It is understood that tho house was alsp insured.
