MAORI CHIEFS IN ENGLAND
VISIT TO SIR JOHN GORST AUDIENCE WITH THE KING fly Telegrapli— Projt Aiuociatiou—OopyrieM London, May 27. Tho High Commissioner for New Zealand, the Hon. Thomas Mackenzie, accompanied the Maori chiefs on a visit "•o Sir John Gorst (Civil Commissioner .' the Waikato from 1861 to 1863), who is recruiting at Margate. Thero was an affecting meeting with Taingahawa, whoso father saved Sir John Gorst's life during tho Maori War. Mr. Mackenzie to-day introduced the Maoris to Mr. Lewis Harcourt, Secretary for tho Colonies, who promised to assist them in securing an audience with the King, on tho understanding that it shall bo purely a courtesy call, and that no grievances shall bo. discussed. Mr. Mackenzie explained the constitutional position to the Maoris, who now understand that tho King will receive them as bearers of historic names. *
