RUGBY RULES. INTER-ISLAND & OTHER CAMES. REFEREE TROUBLE. Tho Management Committeo of the Wellington ltugby Union met last evening, Mr. E. 0. lials.s presiding. Messrs. W Perry, A. E. Dawson, A. C. Kitto, E. A. Little, H. Buck, W. F. Hornig, D. Weir, A. E. Wilson, \V. Hardliarii, and G. Howb were also present. A letter was received from tho secretary of the New Zealand 1 Union intimating that the North v. South Island match* had been fixed to take place at Wellington on June 20. The communication further announced that a team would leave New Zealand on July 3 to tour Australia. "Something doing," remarked a member of tho committee. This was the only comment, and- upon tlie motion of tlio chairman tho letter was referred to tho Selectors, with instructions to nominate representatives for both teams.

Referees & Appointment Board. .Tho, classification of referees was discussed at s6Me length in committee. The secretary of the local Referees' Association Wrote'asking what stand was to-be taken in regard to the classification of referees —whether the Appointment Boar<t was to bo permitted to classify or whether tho classification made by tho committee of the. association was to bo final, and not open to review by the Appointment Board. Tho lotter further stated that it had been decided "that after the referees have been provided for tho senior matches ho senior referees be appointd until tho panel of junior referees has been exhausted." With reference to the first question in tho letter, it was decided: "That the Appointment Board treat as senior referfees those classified as such by tho Rofefcee' Association." In regard to the association's decision as conveyed by the second part of the letter, it was decided: "That we have recommended the Appointment Board that prominent junior referees be, as far as possible, appointed to the best junior games, and have every roason to believe that effect will bo given to the recommendation as far as possible." Tho question of sports bodies using city reserves, and making charges for admission, was referred to in a letter received from the secretary of the Wellington Football Association. The letter stated that the Reserves Committee of the City Council was., prepared to meet a sub-committee of the representatives of all sports bodies at tho Town Hall, at 7.30 p.m. on June 1, to go into tho question. Messrs. Weir and Perrv wore anpointed to attend the meeting on behalf of the union. Tho Exchange Club was granted permission to send a third class team to Palmorston North on June 3 to play a match aaainst United. The following senior players wero granted permission to nlay in tho "Wednesday competition:—H. Nunn and D. W\ Madden (Potone); H. M'Leod and N. C. Averv (Oriental); and Fisher and Algar (Tramways). It was resolved that matches be commenced at 2.45 p.m: in future. A match between a Wellington representative team and Mr. Parata's Maori team is to take placo on the Athjetic Pnrk on the nftornoon of .Tune 3. It was decided to occasionally allow lower grade matches to be played on tho Athletic Park as "curtain-raisers."

Senior Cround Fixtures. Tho following grounds have, been allotted for tho senior games on Saturday:—Poneko v. Wellington (Park No. 1); University v. St. James (Park No. 2); Potone v. Oriental (Potono); Melroso v. Athletic (Hutt). THE MID-WEEK COMPETITIONS. BUTCHERS & OMENTAL. Oriental mot Butchers at Athletic Park yesterday in the mid-week competitions and a fairly good. , game resulted in a win for the former by 9 points to 6. PETONE & ARTILLERY. In tho Wednesday competition, Petono met Artillery, at Petono, and a closo gamo resulted. Artillery/ appeared to have- a slight advantage throughout tho first spell, and, fivo minutes before halftime, scored their first try, but wore unsuccessful in their attempt at goal. Later, a free-kick ngninst Petono ennhled them to add three points to their score. Artillery, f>—o. In tho second half Petone showed better form, and a try was secured after a strenuous effort, and the major points added. The game thus ended: Artillery, G points; Petoiie, 5 points.

' MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. Mr. A. E. Wplls presided at the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Football Association last evening. Tlie secretary of tho Swifts Club forwarded a letter complaining of the state of the dressing accommodation at the Petone ground. It was resolved that tho Attention of tho St. David's and Pctono Clubs he drawn to tho matter, and that they be requested to make better arrangements for visiting teams. Mr. H. Green, secretary of the St. David's Club (Petone) wrote stating that in his opinion the time was now ripo for the introduction of the "Soccer" game into tho Hutt Valley Permission was granted St. David's Club to visit Palnierston on Jnnc 3. A previous motion that the Y.M.C.A. iilid St. David's third division match be played as a'curtnin-rnispr to the Hos-pital-Corinthian fixture on the Basin Reserve on June 3, was rescinded, and a match between Y.M.C.A. mid Brooklyn senior teams was substituted. Messrs. A. E. Wells and A. Williams were appointed to attend a meeting of representatives, from the various winter snorts bodies in Wellington (to be held in the Town Hall on Monday, Juno 1), for tho purpose- of allocating dates on which a charge for admission to the Basin and other city reserves can be made. MID-WEEK HOCKEY MATCHES HEREAWA& PAKEHA. Tho AVednesday hockey games were resumed yesterday after a week's interruption. Easily the best gamo of tho day was that between Ilereawa and I'akeha, and though the ground washeavy tho match'was the best mid-week gaiuo played this season. The form was a decided improvement .on previous matches. Pakelia wcro defeated by tho narrow margin of two goals to one. tho loss being, to a largo degree, resultant on a weak link in the forward line. In tho first, half of the gamo play was very even, whilo in tho second spell Pakeha recovered, hut scored their only goal too late. Colo was tho shining light for tho winners right through, ancl was responsible for both goals. A feature of tho match was tho splendid defence put up by both sides, particularly so on the part of Clapshaw, custodfan for Pakeha. Turner was responsible for Pakeha's one and only . goal. Mr. J. C. Cusack was referee.
