ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
COURTENAY PLACE FIRE. A THIRD VICTIM. _ The : deathisanii6unce'd'by the police of John Stevenson, who received serious burns abput the binly in tho recent Tiro which destroyed tho Manchester Private Hotel in C'ourtenay Place. Deceased had been staying ,it tho hotel for somo tirao previous to tho ■ fire, under tho name of "Jack IV. Smith." He was a wharf labourer by occupation. For some- timo recovery had been anticipated, but yes--terday morning tho case took a. moro serious turn, arid death took placo at' the Hospital at about 11 a.m. At tho timo of his admission to tho institution deceased had slight influenza, which developed into pneumonia. Ho was n single man, 33 years of age, and has an uncle named Ford residing at Waimate. An ir.quost will bo hold, but the date lias not yet been;fixed.
Others who wero injured are reported to bo progressing well at tho Hospital. Andrew Regan, who injured liis back in'a fall from the firo escape, has been discharged; Miss C. O'Neill, who was severely burned, will soon able to leave the institution. Miss Mary Higginson, who fell and broke several ribs, is making :i good recovery,, though it will bo somo time beforo sho can be discharged, i , FISHERMAN'S DEATH. 'An inquest was opened at the Magistrate's Court yesterday by Mr. W. G. lliddell, S.M., concerning tho sudden death of nit Italian fisherman named Salvatore I'rederico, aged 33 years, -who died on board the fishing launch Tripoli on Monday last off Pencarrow Head. Dr. Kington Fyffe stated that ho had conducted a, post-mortem examination on Tuesday. The condition -was such as to suggest the presence of somo irritant, but, in the absence of poisoning, tho cause of death could only bo put down ■ to pneumonia. Witness remarked that ho proposed to analyse a portion of tho. stomach. Antonio Dellabarco said that he, with tho deceased and others, were fishing all tho morning lip till half-past 1 p.m. '. Deceased went below at about 1.30 p.m., and had two pears and somo bread and ' cheese. Amodeo Casa afterwards went ■below. Ho found deceased asleep, and informed witness, who endeavoured to ivako him up, but as bo could not do so ' ho called Casa, and they carried deceased to the deck. There was plenty of air in . tho engine-room, whero tho deceased had beon found on the flow. Witness brought the launch into town, and communicated with tho police. Amadeo Casa gnve similar evidence. The Coroner adjourned 'he inquest aine die, in order that a chemical ■analysis of the stomach might be made. BODY RECOVERED. Testerday evening tho police were advised that the. body of James Forbes, who was drowned on Monday in the Hutt River, near Silverstream, had been recovered. An inquest will bo held, but the uato has not yet been fixed.
MARYBOROUGH FATALITY. Information has been received by the police to tlio effect tliat the body of 'Francis Forbes dimming, a rcsidont of , . Palmerston North, who was reported to have been lost down the valley at Martinborotigh, has been found. Dccenijccl, who was camping with a friend in tho valley, was found a short distance away from the camp. CARPENTER DROPS DEAD. (By Tebsvaph.—fln,eri*l Corrosrondont.i Featherston, May 27.
