GENERAL FARMING NEWS.
Speaking of the usefulness of the Farmers' Onion at tho Farmers' Union banquet at l'atea on Thursday, Mr. Barton said: "We were threatened by the centre of power being icmoved from those who were capable of exercising it to a body of irresponsible persons, and but for the timely action of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, the whole community would have been landed in a state of disorganisation and probable ruin."
Tho only nomination received for the I position of president of tho Pahiatua A. ami ,I'. Association, is that of Mr. Charles Avery (writes our l'ahiatua correspondent). Messrs. A. Ross, A. M Kay, and A. Barrell havo been reelected vice-presidents. The committee (of 21 fnembers) consists of several ■"resh names, tho list being as follows: ■fossrs. T. Riddel, E. Darley, P. Thomson, "H. Griffith, L. Johanscn, A. Pron, 11. Kaiiiburton, H. R. Wilton, G. Richmond, G. 11. Uodd, J. Manson, W.' Wak"etniii. J. D. C. Crewe, D. O'Brien, J. T: Hewitt, E. Harveyl 1?. M'Farlane, ?. N. Avery, J. Ross, president of tlio Fahiatua branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, will repiescnt that branch at tlio Wellington Provincial Conference which opens at Wanganui to-day. X pig, fattened on the farm of Mr. W. E. Rose, of Konini, and purchased by the Wairarapa Bacon Company's buyer last week, should prove an excellent advertisement for that district. The animal weighed 5381b. live weight, and '1011b. dead weight'. Writing an open letter to ono of tlio proprietors of a North Island freezing works, a Tvell-known Hawko's Bay farmer, in discussing the vexed question of freezing works makes the following suggestion:—"lf you visited a coal mine on tho West Coast of the South Island, you would see every truck of coal coming from the mine pass over a weighbridge. Inside the weighhouse you will see two clerks tallying tho scale. Ono clerk is in the company's employ, the other is paid by the men. The result is satisfactory to both parties. Why could not this system be put into practice in freezing works?"
Messrs. A. Schmilt, A. A. Ross, and Captain C'olbeck have been appointed delegates from tho Auckland province to tho annual conference of the.New Zealand Farmers' Union in Wellington.
