Tlio conservation of breeding,ewes was strongly urged by .Mr. C. J. Reakes, of tlio Government Stock Department, when speaking to an Auckland "Star" representative on the results of tho provincial conference of the Now Zealand Farmers' Union. Mr. Reakes pointed out the danger of farmers, being tempted by high.prices to sacrifice to tho slaughter ewes which woidd bo more serviceable to thorn and to the country as a whole if used for breeding purposes. Once let the supply of breeding ewes dwindle, said Mr. Keakes, and tho greatest difficulty would be experienced in replenishing. He added that New Zealand, being unlike Australia in the matter.of interchanging between tlio States, must prepare to be .-self contained hi this connection.
