<e An enjoyable concert was provided by Mr. Hoolo at tho Sailors' Friend Society last evening, when a large audience was present. Mr. James' Moore, missioner, occupied tho chair. Tho following contributed items to tho programme-:—Misses Fontaine, Anderson, Malcolm, Itiekett, Palmer, Messrs. Barker. Hoale, Marrow. Hoolo (sen.), Kobar, Adams, Marshall (R.M.S, Tainui), and Speller fIt.M.S. Tainui). Mrs. Swinburne played tie accompaniments. Several popular choruses were sung by tho audience. The performers wero accorded a hearty vote of thanks at tho conclusion of the concert, ami light refreshments were afterwards dispensed.

Sir Robert Stout, wiio is at present in Palmorstcn in connection with the sessions, of the Supreme Court, had time to attend a meeting of tho PJiifcisopbrcai Society on Thursday evening, when the subject discussed was, "The Effect of Wet and Dry Epochs on Ancient Civilisation."lf The writer of the? paper was Mr. William Welch, of Sydney, and'focmerly of I'almerst'ofi. A pruiiinent part of the paper described the pulsation theory of climatic changes which have caused largo tracts of tho world, once teeming with people-, i-o be rsow howl, ing wildernesses. Sir Robert Stout joined i the discussion of what he termed a very interesting and instructive paper. The study of ancient civilisation, ho said, like the study of many other things, brought home forcibly, to mam's mind the grandeur and mystery of the universe. On Sir Robert Stout's motion, Mr. Welch received a hearty voto of thanks.
