TENDER FOE NEW BtHLDING ACCEPTED. Tho tender of Mr. -A. E. Hurrell has been accepted for tho erection of tho new building for tho Boys' Institute, in Tasman Street. The plans have- been prepared by Mr. W- Gray. Young, and show a five-story steel-framo building, with a. frontage of 40ft % to Tasman Street, and a depth of 178 ft. Entrance is mado te tho Institute into a tiled entrance ball from Tasman Street, whilst on the other side is tho entrance to the swimming bath, with the secretary's office between the two entrances. Tho whole of tho remainder of the ground floor is taken up by the swimming bath. Tho pool, 100 ft. _ s 30ft., is to be completely covered with white glazed tiles, relieved with a green tile border, and the floors and corridors surrounding it are to he finished with /red tiles.
, Provision has been ' made for o diving stage, spring-boards, showers, and dressing boxes. The water is to bo heated by a boiler in the basement, so that tho hath can be used all the year round. It is _ the intention to hold awimniin" carnivals ia the hath, and accommodation hag been made for several hundred people on galleries at each end, and four lifts are: shown to tho kitchen quarters, so as to provido for afternoon tea on these occasions.
Access is made to tho upper _ floors by a wide reinforced concrete staircase. On tho first floor aro the mocking hall and library, with tho gymnasium in a separate lying. Tho dining-rooni aaid kitchen, quarters arc on tho second floor, and the two upper floors aro taken up with the classrooms and bedrooms, with the necessary bathrooms, showers, etc. A flat roof is provided, to bo used in conjunction with tho living rooms. Tho front elcvatism has been designed in the English rcnaissajioo style, and is to bo built with pressed.brickwork, relieved with cement cornice, and balcony. Tho roof, is to bo covered with grey green AVestaoreland slates, which will bo enhanced by the. white-painted doorways of tho top floor. Tho contract is to bo completed in twelve months' time.
