Interviewed respecting tho London cablo message stating that tho Nord-doutscher-Lloyd proposed to extend its operations to New Zealand, shipping mon expressed a doubt as to the storv pointing out the, fact that sinco tho company was only able, with a subsidy of a o.uarior of a million, to run a monthly service between Australia and Kuropo at a loss, it seemed obvious that an extension .of tho scrvico to New Zealand, already served by steamers via the Cape, was not a commercial proposition. It was suggested, however, that the movement may bo part of tho Gorman public policy of development or t its deep sea-carrying trade.
