JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Our Special Correspondent?) PALMERSTON. Infantile paralysis was tho subject of a report to the Hospital Hoard yestoriay ay Dr. Putmau and Dr. I'eaeli. In tho course of their report thi-y stated that the epidemic of infantile paralysis is essentially a disease of early childhood, most frequently affecting children between their first and fourth years, and rarely seen after the sixth year. It was, therefore, advisable, as far as possible, to isolate cases for a period of at least two weeks after the development of acute symptoms (which generally last about a week) is over. It was, however, almost impossible to effectively isolnto all infective cases. Tho most that could be done was to isolate as far as possiblo all definite cases from contact' with other children. At tho end of the period of isolation steps should bo taken to fumigate tho house. The Health Inspector reported ono case at Umutoi (a boy aged 4 years), and another caso at Colyton (a girl aged 3 years). Both wcro now in hospital. Tho ike-a-sicic tourney, which opened the Hockey Association's season on Wednesday, was won by the following teams:—Senior,- Campbell Street School Old Boys A; Ladies' High School B; Juniors, Rongotea; Third Class, Technical School B. Mr. J. G.' Wilson was yesterday reelected chairman of the Hospital Board. Tho board also granted tho matron (Miss M'Lagan) a year's leave of absence for a holiday trip to England. MASTERTON. ■ Considerable interest is being manifested iii the Queen of the Carnival event that is being instituted by tho Wairarapa Caledonian Society. Nominations for the evont close on Saturday. A big "tangi" has been held over his remains. 1 The Mauricevillo Rifle Club has completed its shooting for tho season. The championship was won by Rifleman R. F. Witton, and the' handicap aggregate by Rifleman R. F. Dagg. The Hon. James Auen, Minister of Education, is expected to visit Masterton one day next iveelc. Mr. A. C. Pragnell has been appointed solo selector of the Wairarapa Hockey Asociation. MOHAKA. The fine weather with" which' we have been favoured for some time has disappeared, and now it is heavy rain and cold.' A severe storm swept over tho district last week, doing a considerable amount of damage. At "Mohaka" Station a . large tree was uprooted and whirled on to a large shed used as a storo house, completely demolishing tho building and contents. At , Woodlands, Mr. Moseman's residence, tho chimney of the dwelling was carried away. The floods have also played havoc with the roads in tho district, whilo number's of sheep have-' been drowned. Mr. F. Atkins, of Mahia, is at present staying at Kakariki Station The game about heie, especially, pheasants and quail, is vury plentiful, and sportsmen should havo good sport and satisfactory baj;s. Mr. and Mrs. Ryder have returneduo their homo, Kakariki Station; f from Riverslea, Otaki TAIHAPE. An effort is being made to Jiave a. school established at Mr. 11. W. Smith's mill at Mataroa. The Railway Department lias notified its intention of adopting the electric lighting system at tho Taihape Railway Station, and the Taihape Borough Council has been approached in connection with the matter. The station and railway yards aro at present lighted by means of an aerogen gas plant. Two cases of diphtheria wore reported in Taihapo on Monday, both patients being removed to the Hospital. ■ Mr. F. Churcher has , disposed of his Taihape property of 200 acres to Mr. 11. Richardson, of Koeke. At a meeting of the Taihapo Volunteer Fire Brigado on Monday, a motion was carried to the effect that tho brigade resume duty in a body. PAHIATUA. The "Queen of the Carnival" competition, on similar lines to those held in several other towns in tho Dominion, will be held in Pahiatua at a later date. The Pahiatua Progressive interested in the movement, mid the proceeds will be devoted towards raisintr funds for tho purchase of the scenic reserve, recently offered to tbo Borough Council, and for town beautifying purposes. Tho initial t meeting was held on Tuesday evening . The newly-formed Golf Club at Hamua has a membership of 40.
