CIVIC AFFAIRS

COUNCIL MEETING. ' I Tho ordinary fortnightly meeting of tho City Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), Councillors R. Fletcher, A. H. Hindmarsh", It.'A. Wright, M. F. Luckie, E. Trcgear, L. M'Kenzic, W.'J. Thompson, T. C. A. Hislop, H. Buddie, G. Frost, and W. H. V. Barber. Leave of absence was granted to Councillors J. E. Fitzcerald and J. Godber. . On the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was decided that consideration of the question of improving the formation and width of the lower end of Obiro Road should be postponed until ■ the estimates for this year are being considered. It was decided that the first ouarter'a levy of tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board (£3256 16s. 5d.) for tho year 1914-15 be passed for payment. Tho levy for the year amounts to £13,027 os. Brl., as against last year's levy of £13,623. Tho Tramways and Power Stations Committee recommended:— That in accordance with tho arrangement made with tho Audit DeDartment, tho nioupy to the credit of the t/amways . and lighting aecitlent funds (£7500 and £1700 respectively) be deposited with tho district fund, under a separate hook entry, the district fund to allow interest at i\ per cent, per annum. The committee reported:— • That tho Tramways Board of MnnnL'Pinent report with respect to Councillor Fuller's, notice of motion that a report bo furnished ns to the extension nf the present Brooklyn trnmline to Tnft Street, that the pronosn! would involve an expenditure of £4000, and would not increase tho earning power of the cars. They therefore cannot son their way to recommend the pronosa] for tho favourable consideration of the council. The report was anprorod. Tho tender of Jonn O'Donnell, for pile-driving, was accepted, and also tho tender of Stewart mid Co., fqr crossarms on electric light poles.
