ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
FATAL ACCIDENT. 'AT A PRIVATE HOSPITAL. "A peculiar accident with a fatal ter- . mination occurred, at tho Davis Street private hospital on Saturday afternoon. A few weeks ago Mr. Albert Edward Etchells, of the firm of Usher and Etchclls, leather bag manufacturers, of Manners Street, lost his only child (a ■ boy) in a trap accident at Normandale. (This loss caused a severe shock to his nerves,,and.on .Thursday last ho went into the private hospital mentioned for treatment. By some means ho either fell or .jumped from tho balcony of tho institution at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, and sustained.such injuries that ho died an hour and a half later. Deceased, who was only 32 years of age, was formerly a resident of Launceston, "Tasmania. He. leaves a'widow! •'There will-bo an inquiry into tho circumstances surrounding the accident. FLYING PIECE OF STEEL. r A boiler-maker named Leith J. M'llvride, employed at the Government Railway Workshops, and residing at 3!) Petone Esplanade, miH'with' an acci-xle-nfc, and was admitted to tho Hospital on Saturday. It appears that he was engaged in cutting-iron plato when'a piece of steel flew off tho chisel, and flntored tho back of his hand. First i aid was rendered by the staff, and, later, Dr. Ross considered it advisable that the case should be treated at the Hospital. FALL FROM DECK-TO DECK. Yesterday afternoon a seaman on tho Union S.S. Company's collier Whangape had the misfortune to slip and fall from deck to deck on that steamer. A sad event occurred at '.the Ross Goldfields' Kanicrf Forks. Power Station, on Saturday, when the body of Remini Sargisou, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Sargison, a well-known resident of Hokitika, was found close to the danger zone of the electrical gear.. From what can be. 'gathered it appears that deceased, by some means, came into . contact with stlip electrical current. A doctor was in attendance shortly after the body , was found, but life was extinct. Deceased was very popular, and liad made considerable advance in his profession as an electrical operator. • Ho was nineteen years of age. An inquest is to bo hold to-morrow morning^ INFANT'S BODY FOUND. Auckland, May 9. Dr. Murray, who was called to attend, a girl, found a basket in a corner'"of.; the- room containing the dead body of a newly-born child. It is understood tho child had lived three or four hours. CASES OF SUDDEN DEATH. Dunedin, May 10. A man named John Cowan, believed to bo a little- over 30 years of age, and single, was' found de.ad in bed at his lesidence, Stuart Street, this morning. At present the cause of death is unknown. , Neil M'Auley, aged 24 years, and employed as a, groom at.the Ballarat Hotel, Arrowtown, was found dead in bed an Friday. Death was duo to heart dis?aso. Deceased's relatives live at South .Dunedin. DEATH FROM EXPOSURE. Carterton, May 10. James Chapman, farmer, of Taratahi, was found dead outside his house at 5.30 this morning. At an inquest held to-day tho coroner returned a verdict, of death From exposure. RUSSIAN SEAMAN'S FATAL FALL. Clsbcrne, May , 10. A Russian seaman jiamed Albert Vasfclo was found dead in bed oil the Fcbooner Elsie Marv, on tho Harbour Bonrd's slipway early this morning. It is understood that he fell down a ladder when climbing .on to tho shin, late pi) Saturday night nnd received injuries. ]!n climbed up again and went to bed, tut did not wake again.
