(£1) - 16 0 LONDON WOOL SALES. No reason for complaint is furnished by the current London' wool tales. The toneof the market is firm and prices remain steady. There lifts been an advance of about 5 per tout, in fine wools, but crossbred wools are selling at about the closing rates of the March «ilra. Tho catalogue consisted principally of wool from New Zealand, the proportion being 130,000 bales out of a, total of IBS.COO. which is far too great. The strike of waterside workers , a few months ago disorganised the transport trade, and shearing was tlclavotl by wet weather. This would account "for the fact that no Sew Zealand new clip arrived for the January ealcs, and comparatively little for the March sales. BUDGET INSURANCE. When the last mail left London, underwriters at Lloyds were charging heavy rates for what is known as "Budget Insurance," 'underwriters holding the ' view that there was a very strong probability of a revision of the existing taxes on foodstuffs. It was very difficult to obtain protection against the chance of a reduction in the sugar duty under 20 guineas per cent., while as much as 15 guineas was being charged for total abolition. Over a period pf years Lloyd's underwriters have made a very fine thing out of Budget insurance business. In feet, more often than not, the whole of the premiums they have received have represented net profit, subject to ordinary expenses. The underwriters have attain scored a win, as the scheme of taxation 'proposed.in the Budget does not touch foodstuifs. ULSTER AND STOCKS. The Ulster crisis left its mark on Stock Exchange securities during the month Peb- , ruary 20 to March 20. In that period, it 35 reported, business was more or les6 at a standstill, with a. steady downward movement in prices. According to the "Bankers' Magaziiie," 387 representative pecurities depreciated during the month by £47,612X00. and this occurred notwithstanding tho fact that monetary conditions were favourable for a further improvement in Home securities. The decline was most pronounced in those departments which while English railway? were affected Vy fcara of further labour troubles. Customs duty collected at the port of Wellington yesterday amounted to £3775 12-5. Bd. .FUfANfUAIi CABLEGRAMS. By Telegraph—Press AeeoeiaUon-Copyright '_~., , : London, Jlny 5.
