FEATURES OF PAST MONTH. The April report from the Labow Department states that the eemHitfofls of trade and employment have be«H fairly satisfactory on tbo whole. The Easter trade is stated to liavo been Rood, and drapers, boot retailers, and grocers, all report good business tinriiiK the month. Several ironmongers ulso report a good average month. Tho buiidiiiK trade reports are, on the whole, satisfactory, with the exception of the plastering trade, which, at the present time is very dull. The report of the officers in cluij-go at the Employment Bureau is as follows:—"The number, of callers seeking the employment '(luring the month has shown-a slight increase, tho majority consisting of unskilled workers. Quite a large number arc physically incapable of doing liavvjiftg work, and. H-β a consequence, tho difficulty of placing them was considerable. In fact, many are still calling. Tho lumber assisted during the period under review was 191, of whom 58 were married and 133 single. A total of one hundred and eighty-two were sent to private employment, and nine to Government works. Those assisted comprised gardeners, hotel workers, drivers, -carpenters, antl joiners, bricklayers, farm hands;- miners, labourers, etc. Pofty4wo came from the North Island, 25 from tljo South Island. 28 from this Commonwealth, 84 from Great Britain, and 13 from other countries. In addition, 18 iriyes ami 10 children were assisted to join their relatives.
