PANAMA EXPOSITION
' NEW ZEALAND TO MAKE A ', SIRGNG SHOWING, Messrs. James Macintosh, Thomas Gray, C, W. Jones, A. W. Newton, and H. F. Allen (seecetary) vvero present at a meeting yesterday of the Wellington Centre Committee in connection witli tlm Panama Exposition. The secretary; reported that the subcommittee appointed for the purpose had waited on the'secretary of the executive committco (Mr. Maurice O'Brien), who h«-d informed them that tho Government proposed to receive and forward on to San Franeisso all approved exhibits, and not only would the exhibitors not be put to any expense in tho matter of transit, buttho Government would insure th.ci.ll against loss. The Central Committee's dtity was to encourage manufacturers to exhibit, but it was j.wt, to, incur any expense without the written authority cf Mr, O'Brien, which, of course, tied their.hands to somo extent. Still they know exactly where they were. ■ Mr. Allan said that bVhad eomnwiiiiwith tha secretary of the Harbour Board (Mr._H._E. Nieholls) on tho matter of cxhibitiag panoramic views of Wellington Harbour and the' wharves, aftd iiieidentally stated that the Government was providing a special gallery for the display of views of ports, cities, awl rural distrkts of Now Zealand, The Harbour Bsard is to cousider the proposition. It was also reported that the Government intended to tako a series of kiuomatograph views, illustrating our staple industries, such as he.mp-»akiiig, woolshearing, slieep-miistsriii", and the frozen meat and dairying industries, for exhibition at intervals during the Exhibition. .The Wellington 3fent Export Company had decided to make an exhibition of meats,' and possibly one of wool, and the directors of the Gear Meat Company were considering the. matter. Diniock and_ Oct. would also probably make an exhibit of their wards, ' Mr. A. E.'Bonne, secretary of the Wellington Woollen Company,' had Stat-, ed thai his company, already had a representative in the United States. The difficulty they had encountered in America in respect to nigs was that the demand in the main for old-fashioned Scotch jjlaid. patterns, as distinct from the patterns in favour here (on the Wt, a different pattern en each.side of the rug), and they could not very well alter their looms to make rugs after old <tesigtis, as not only would they lose their identity, but then New Zealand tugs would be sold as American. Mr. Donne l.iad stated that the matter would be brought under the attention ef his directors, Mr. Allen informed a Dominion- reporter that there was very little chance of potting manufacturers.in ordinarv to exhibit 'at San Francisco. Other than our staple products «nd imjnsdrics directly arising from them, he did not see tho advantage to ho gained from sending any other manufactures to a country that could "knock the stuffing out of ' lis" at rnantifttcltirimj pretty well any- ' thing.' There was, however, tho nrosprcit of them being a good.show of primary products, and doubtless the tittractions New Zealand possessed to the sportsman, tourist, nnS settlor would [ be propcrlv sot forth in an attractive ' manner. New Zealand had secured a fine control site for Its display. It was immediately at the rear of the Palace of Finn-Arts, a gorgeous structure that will h? fronted Ivy nn nrlificiai lake nsd a f beautiful fountain. The position was a. . central oiic—much more so, for example, than the space allotted te Australia.
