EXPLORATION ON THE FLY RIVER
—; a TRACES OF GOLD IN UPPER REACHES By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, May 5. Judge Murray, tho Papuan Administrator, has arrived here. Interviewed regarding tho recent exploration on the Fly River, he said tho party had ascended the river for a distance of 530 miles. At one village they had found natives wearing cuirasses of thickly-plated rattan cane as a shield aaginst arrows. In addition to hows and arrows, the natives carried weapons of egg-shaped stone, and clubs with long handles. At another place the party witnessed evolutions by disciplined men rarely seen in Papua. In tho upper reaches wero found traces of gold. Judgo Murray thinks that, if Sir Rupert Clarke's expedition finds gold in payable quantities a rush will ensue, and this will solve the present problem regarding the future settlement and development of the island.
