NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Br Glemcok.] There will bo taring at Hastings and Blenheim on Wednesday and Thursday next. The '.Ashburton Cup Meeting will take place on Ihursdayaud Friday next, fiteulinnan, who won the Cup last year, is engaged in tins year's race. Those who intend being present at tho Marlborough Cup Meeting this week can leave Wellington' at midnight to-morrow and be back early on Friday morning. The rough.'weather of. Saturday stopped several trainers from shipping their horses to Blenheim, but if the Mapourika gets ! aw to-night she will have a full load. The Hawke's Bay meeting, which opens ou Wednesday, promises to bo the most successful autumn fixture yet held by this club. Record fields will contest the Cup and Porangahau Handicap, both of which should be good races. The Hnwko's pay Stakes, six furlongs and a half, is the attraction for-the second, day. Most of the leading two-year-olds will bo starters in this event. Isaac Earnshaw, who died in Sydney last week, was one of the bost-k'nowii trainers in Australasia. Some time back he was said to be 6iilfering from cancer, and though ho took a trip to England to consult the leading specialists there it did him little good. In his day Earnsh.w turned nut many good winners, including tho champion Poseidon. As no provision has been made in the Ashburton County Racing Club's programme for penalising any but winners of flat races, Mile and Siniot Pure, both of whom won at Tiranru, cannot, have their weights increased for tho First TJurdlo Jiacc on Thursday next. As tho result of being badly galloped on in the Timuru Cup, Specia'lform was unable to fulfil her second-day engage-
ments at the South Canterbury meeting, and is an unlikely starter at the Asliburlon meeting this week. Autumnus was very sore after racing nl Awapuni, but this: will, no doubt, wear oft' during the time lie' is in winter n wirier?. f'acoliorse owners and breeders will note with interest that ft draft of the Karaimi yearlings will bo offered by auction by .Messrs. Williams and Kettle, Ltd., at. the Stortford Lodge Yards, Hastings, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 7, the second day of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's races. Tho youngsters to bo offered are an exceptionally well-bred lot, and are all closelv related to good winners. There nre two geldings, both by Birkenhead (imp-), from Content, and Mobility respectively. The fillies comprise five by Birkenhead, and two by Hymottus (imp.). The dams of the Birkenhead fillies are Agony, Chant, Lullaby, Guitar, and Maluri. The two Hymottus fillies are both born in the purple lis far as pedigrees arc concerned. Witch Hazel is a i uh-sistcr to the hurdler Witched, being bv Sir Lancelot—Elflock, by Nordenfeldt-Elfin, and is therefore related to The Elf. dam of Bleriot. Tho other Hymettus filly is from Wootlpiest. Kilts seems to be ns roguish over fences as ho was on the fiat. At Timaru he ran off on both days. On the second day two onlookers at tho jump made frantic efforts to keep him straight by waving handkerchiefs and sticks. Their, eftorts wore- unavailing, however, except in that they may, says an exchange, nave been partly responsible for Salathicl falling. After the race the stipendiary steward had tho persons concerned on the carpet, and, on KiltgV trainer admitting that he was responsible for the tactics pursued by the olher parties, ho was fined .£5. Soldiers' Chorus, who went amiss recently, has been sold to tho well-known Bivefton trainer,-B. M'Kay, who will probably retire the Martian horse to tho stud.
