WANGANUI HARBOUR POLL CARRIED

GREAT CHANGES COMING. LINERS TO BERTH NEXT YEAR. (By Teleeraph.-Pres3 Association.) VVanganul, April 29. A poll was taken to-day oft a proposal by tho Harbour Uoard to raiso a loan of £150,000 to complete tho harbour scheme. It was carried by an overwhelming .majority, 1563 being for it, and Gl against.

The board will immediately cable to England for an up-to-date dredge, which has been selected already, and proceed with the. construction of wharfage accommodation and a floating basin. It is expected that ocean liners will berth at the wharf next season to take away frozen meat. Thero is at present a depth of 25 feet at the mouth of tho river, .whero there was only 12 feet or 14 feet before tho harbour works wero undertaken, and ocean steamers could now berth at Castleeliff if tho wharfage accommodation were sufficient. As soon ns the dredge arrives it will cut a 17ft. channel up to tho- AVanganui Town Wharf. This depth, according to tho engineers, will bo easily sustained by tho river scour, and, by carrying the training moles further out to seai a depth of 32 feet at tho mouth oE tho river is assured. .
