UNIVERSITY DEBATING SOCIETY
The first ordinary debate for the year of the Victoria University College De* baling Society was held in tins college social hall on Saturday evening. There was a largo attendance, and Sir. G. G. G. Watson, M.A., LL.P., presided. Before entering upon the usual business of the evening, Mr. H. E. Evatts, 8.A,, LI/..SL, stated that he was desirous of moving a hearty vote of thanks to Messrs. Watson and Si.ovwrigiit, the representatives of the society at the Easter tournament held at Chfiateliurch, who had been successful in regaining for Victoria, University College the Joynt Challenge Scroll. This vote of thanks was earfiod by acclamation. The motion, which was moved by Mr. H. E. Evans, and supported by Mr. W. E. Hogg, was; "That the Massey Government has merited the confidence of the people of New Zealand." Messrs. L. P. Leary and H. N. Ewart opposed. On being put to the meeting,, the motion was carried fey -v small majority. The judge, tho Rev. E. R. Harries, ■ complimonted the society on an interesting and instructive debase. As a- recent 'arrival in Now Zealand, ho was pleased to see- that University students were keenly alive to the affairs of their country, *Ho placed tho first five speakers in the following order:-— Messrs. VI. E. Evans, L. Moss, A. B, Siovwrigbt, It. P. Leary. and M'Nivoii.
