POLLING BOOTHS IN CAMP

The returning officer has appointed a polling place for the borough elections at the Kowai Camp for tho benefit of Territorials, who Will be away ou Wednesday. . Tho borough solicitors advised nira that while the English Statute requires polling places to bo within the district, the New Zealand Act does not say so. Clause Bof Section 7 provides that no election shall be questioned by reason that "a polling, place was appointed outside the district, it such polling place has been actually appointed. " They agreo with Johfte oil Local Government, that Section 7 contemplates and permits the appointment of a polling place outside tho district. If anyone cares to question the validity of tho votes so taken it can bo decided afterwards, but could not he decided unless votes were actually taken. It follows that the cost of taking such notes is legally payable out of the borough ■funds., . The booth at the camp is-of .■importance, as the Mayoral election is likely to bo unusually hard fought.
