CHARGES OF THEFT & ASSAULT. Mr. D. G. A , . Cooper, S.M., presided over Saturday's sitting of )ho Magistrate's Court. A sort of sequel to the imprisonment of Goorgo Leonard Bull and Mee Hung and tho placing of Edith Florid* M'Konzie and Emily Johnson in tie Salvation ■ Army Home for twelve months, was the appearance in Court <rf- Albert Hansen and Harry Spoonor, who worejointly charged with breaking and entering the temporarily unoccupied dwell-ing-houso of Emily Johnson in Frederick Street and stealing therefrom i'ufnituro to Iho value of £12 12s, On this charge both accused were remanded ■until Wednesday. Hansen was further charged with assaulting Constable J. J. Wiisofl, and with damaging a helmet valued at Ss. 6d., tho property of tho Now Zealand Government., He pleaded not guilt;, and was remanded until Wednesday, No application for bail was made.

WO GRAPE STEALERS. Herman Henry Grell and .Saaue-l Pomeroy were jointly charged with tho theft of 771b. of grapes, valued at, £3 175., tho property of Robert Orr, of Lower Hutt. Each accused pteaded guilty. ■ Police-Inspector Hendrey-. stated that the grapes had been stolen on Thursday morning last, when both men had been seen riding bicycles from tie direction of tho Hutt. A constable had followed thorn on another bicycle, $nd. had succeeded in capturing Pomeroy,' bat Grtsfl was only captured on tbo following day. Pomeroy had stated that ho had stolen the grapes in ordor to procure food for his wife and children. Grell hM a bad record, but Pomeroy had only ottco previously been before tho Court. The Magistrate ordered tbft men to make good the value of the grapes. In default Grell would be required to undergo, soven* days' imprisonment sad Pomeroy two days' imprisonment.

STRUCK SHIP'S OFFICER. For assaulting his officer, Jsflics; A. Patterson, Harry Beiinett, a seaman on the. steamer Monowai, was fiaed £1 in default seven days' imprisonment. • The circumstances of the case, according to Inspector Hondrey, wens that on, Friday afternoon accused went on board tho steamer in an intosicaied condition. • ARMED 'WHILST DRtJNE. ' James Gallagher pleaded guilty tda charge of being found drunk, whilst in tho possession of firearms and ammunition. Inspector Hendroy stated that accused had been found in the condition mentioned with a seven-chambered revolver in his possession. Q'ive chanjliisr had been discharged, but tho other six wero fully loaded. It was ft-bsolutely unnecessary for people to srni themselves, and ho asked for a hea-Vy penalty as a warning to others.
