NAVAL OFFICERS TRIED BY COURT-MARTIAL
SEQUEL TO FLEET PAYMASTER'S PECULATIONS. By Telesraph-Presa Assoeiation-CoDyrieht "Times" and Sydney "Sun" Serrlce*. London, April 18. As a sequel to Fleot-Paymaster Lowry'e defalcations, Captain Cnyley, and Commander Ridcout, both of H.M.S. Ganges, have been court-mar-tialled for negligence in the supervision of the accounts, and reprimanded.
A Court-martial wag held on hoard H.M.S. Vengeance, at Chatham, kst month, for the trial of Fleet-Paymaster John Moffat Lowry, of H.M.S. Ganges, who had been missing for two months, on charges of desertion and embezzlement. The accused, who pleaded "guilty," was sentenced to three years' penal servitude. There were four oliarges against the accused, namely (1) That ho did desert from H.M.S. Ganges on November 19 last; (2) that, having been entrusted during the months of October and November, 1913, with a sum of JJ24.600,-ho .did fraudulently convert to his own use tho sum of .£13,061 195.; (3) tliat between Octolier U and Novemoer 20, 1913. he did steal 100 .£5 Bank of England notes .which had been received by him in virtne of Wβ employment; and (i) that contrary to the provisions of the King's Regulation's and Admiralty instructions he'did withdraw' from the public account in his charge certainsums oy means of cheques drawn by him in favour of a firm at Portsmouth.
