FATAL FIRE IN TALL TENEMENT
A NEW YORK TRAGEDY
By Telegraph— Vieie Association—Copyright New York, April 17. Fourteen persons aro known to have been killed, four injured, and ono mortally hurt in a fa're in a five-story tenement.
The firo started in tho basement of a five and ton cent, store which occupied tho first floor, and spread rapidly up tho stairway. Many occupants of tho apartment houso escaped by tho iiro escapes. During tho tire a man attempted to escape over a roof, but fell, and was killed. Another was descending when tho lad r der broko. Captain Smith, of the firo brigade, suspended by tho feet from a window, caught and held the man safely until another ladder was procured, tho men boing saved. Firemen are searching the wreckage. They have announced that fourteen bodies have been recovered. Several persons are missing.
