THE MAYORALTY
Citizens should beat in mind that 10-day is the last day on which they will be able to secure enrolment for the ftlayoral election, to be held Into in the month. So far as the Wellington Mayoralty is concerned, very little interest has been shown up to the present in tho contests This probably is due to the fact that a great many people- .do not take very seriously the candidature of Mr. D. M'Larejj and Mr. H, li. Hodlakd— who stand respectively in the interests of the United Labour Party and the Social iDenioeratie Party—and consider that Mr. J. P. Luke has an easy task ahead of him. There, is a very real danger to be feared from this attitude. The prospects of Mft. Luke's re-election unquestionably are extr-emely good, but it- would be extremely foolish of those who reoog* nise the good work he has done to take it for -granted that no effort will be required on their part- to ensure his victory. The greatest danfer confronting him is this over-con-dense- of his Iriendfij which may lead to many of his supporters abstaining from going to the poll, in the belief that their votes will not be needed, To-dfty being the last, day on which citizens entitled to vote can secure enrolment) the opportune Sty should not be missed by thos& who have not -already attended tlthis duty. In another column will be found a list of the places at which the old rolls may be seen, so thai citizens who have any doubt as "to whether their names arc already in , eluded can make sure on. tho point. ; Mr. Lake's opponents have both bees working very bard for some tinj« past. ' Mti- _ Holland has the "%d: Fed" organisation), as troll as its political adjunct, the Social Demo : cratie organisation, to assist his can- , didafcure. It is possible, of e-onrga, . that for legal reasons he ro-ay »6t> : be able to go to the poll, but that : contingency is said to nave been pro- : vided against by an arrangement whicß will enable- Mb. J." Glover to take his place as the representative of the Social Democrats. Bither oj: these candidates would be hfcsty ti> polMhe full strength of tho .Seeial Democratic Party'? vote, Hβ. D. M'Laren has dons a lot. of,streetcorner speaking, but his attitude during the strike, when be kept.so niucn iii the background, seems to have, brought him into • disfavour with many of his old friends both in and out of Labour circles. It is fairly certain that ho will not poll anything like as well as he-did on previous occasions, and it may even happeii that he will be beaten by tho Hotiujieo of the rival. L&Wur-Sooialfet organisation ; and find a place at tho bottom of'the poll. It is unsafe, how-; ever, to attempt to predict with any, confidence tie respective voting strejigth of Messrs. ' H-Ouand and M'LAiifijf. Probably the margin be' tweon the pair will jiot be great.
