HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS. 'OPENING DAY. After heavy rain orer night there was filio weather yesterday for iho Wellington Provincial! Lawn Tennis Association's hard., court championship and handicap tournament,. which opened on the Brougham •• Hill courts. As the courts ,were covered with water in tile morning, it seemed likely that the tournament would have to he postponed until tho afternoon, hut a novel method of clearing off tho water was devised. Several sacks wero tied behind Mr. J. A. B. Howe's motor-car, tho courts wero swept'dry in quick time, and matches were commenced about 10.30 a.m. ■ Good progress was then made, and play was of a good standard in inany of tho games. This morning the tournament- will be continued oh' tho Brougham Hill courts, while tho ladies' championships and , handicap events will be played on the j Wellington Club's courts in Palmer Street, commencing at 9 o'clock sharp. The committee announced yesterday that there will be no luncheon adjourn-ment'to-day. Results of yesterday's matches were as follow :— Men's Championship Singles. Heavy rain, fell last night, and showers were experienced this morning, but tho weather cleared in time to allow play to be started at 1 p.m. The championship events resulted as follow:— > • Men's Singles Championship..
