HUTT RELIEF FUND
A STREET COLLECTION j DECIDED ON BY LADIES' MEETINC. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided at a meeting of the executive committee appointed in connection with the collection and administration of funds in connecton with the Upper Hutt disaster yesterday afternoon. There wcro present:—Messrs. P. J. O'Rcgan, 1). M'Lorcn, J. J. M'Grath, E, H. Webb, Davidson, and A. M. Samuel. It was announced that a good deal of surpriso had . been expressed by many people respecting the amount that Mr. Webb , had said (£5000) would bo necessary to -relievo those who -had suffered by losing in the* fire those whom they depended on. The Mayor made it clear that the amount mentioned was the total that was estimated would bo required to put things straight, but that amount was not expected from the public, but included the amount' that the Government might bo expected, to contribute to tho dependents of those servants of tho State who sacrificed their lives in the fire. It was conveyed that the committee was now only waiting to hear from the Prime Minister (Hon. W. P. Massey) what the Government contribution was likely to be, before an announcement could be made as to what amount was required from the public. It was decided that canvassers he engaged to make an appeal to all the different.trado and commercial interests in the city. Lists for the rogistraton of contributions aro also to bo judiciously ci.-ciilatod in large business ! houses and factories, and tho Mayor i and ohnirnien of-adjacent local bodies i are to ho written to by the secretary (Mr. R. Tait) asking them to assist in collecting money for the laudable object in view. A committee was set up to go carefully into the position- 6f tho dependents, of those who wero killed in the fire and explosion, in order to ascertain with greater exactitude the amount of money that will bo required to make them comfortably free from want. MAYORESS'S MEETINC. STREET COLLECTION TO BE MADE. About a dozen ladies attended the meeting called by tho Mayoress (Mrs. Luke) in the Mayor's Room yesterday afternoon, to determine, what steps shall be taken to assist tho raising of funds in connection with the disaster. Mrs. Luko occupied tho chair, and said that there was every reason' to believe that a good deal of help was needed to secure sufferers by the recent disaster against need. It was decided that the i interest of lother ladies, moro than I could attend the meeting yesterday, bo enlisted, and that a street collection bo mado in Wellington in aid of the fund on Saturday weok (April 18). On the. suggestion of ono lady present it was decided to writo to the secretary of tho Wellington Racing Club, asking that permission be granted and facilities extended for six lady collectors to at tho Trentham racecourse on both days of tho autumn meeting this month for tho purpose of taking up a collection among those presentl - , , -. i Young ladies are also to take up a collection at tho 'concert the Royal Choral Society intend 1 giving in aid of tho fund. . , , ■ Miss Belle Luke was appointed -secre--tary of tho Ladies' Committee.
