;■ TWO GREAT STORAGE WORKS. By Telesrapli—Press Association--Copyrleht Melbourne, April 8. The Premiers' Conference has agreed to the Murray waters scheme for the construction of two great storage- works, ' involving five million pounds worth of work, wliich is to he commenced immediately the agreement has been ratified by the respective Parliaments. At the Inter-State Conference of Premiers hold in Melbourne on January 23, Mil, Mr. J. S. Dethbridge. of tho Victorian Water Commission; Mr. G. M. de Burgh, Chief Engineer of tho Water Supply for New South Wales; and Mr. Graham Stewart, Engineer in Chief for South Australia, were appointed to preparo data for an agreement to be adopted by the three Governments on the question of the Murray waters. This committee presented its report on July 24 of last year. Inter alia, it considered that the ideal condition of regulation by storage would enable all water discharged from.the catchments of the system, less inevitable losses, to be completely controlled and mado available in the volumes and at the times most suitable; that to permit of further irrigation development by any of the three interested States regulation by storage, was needed, and tlint the works of greatest advantage would bo n storage of about 1.000,000 acre feet capacity on tho Upper. Murray and the conversion of Lake Victoria into a storage basin; that with development further storages may be constructed on the other tributaries, involving a higher cost per .unit of volume regulated than works for storage on the Upper Murray, Goulburn, and Lake Victoria; that the period during which navieation is possible on an unlocked river has been shortened by the existing diversions, and will be further shortened when the further diversions for irrigation are made possible by the Cumberoona.
