STORM OF PROTEST

IN NEW SOUTH WALES ASSEMBLY WHARFAGE AND HARBOUR RATES 'SYDNEY'S TRADE THREATENED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, April 7.A veritable storm of protest has been raised in the Legislative Assembly against the new wharfage and harbour rates the Government proposes to levy in Sydney, the objection being that the imposts will adversely affect producers of tho State and drive trade away. The Bill provides for a tax of sixpence per ton on wheat, sixpence per bale on wool, and tenpence per ton on general merchandise, thereby raising £34,000. ■ It is further proposed to impose harbour dues at the rate of tenpenco per ton on ships loading, but this rate will not bo charged if the vessel is loaded at the wharf, the wharfage charge boing sixteenpence per ton. , It is not proposed to extend tho dues .to Newcastle. , The measure fcas been introduced and read a first time.
