THE MAYORALTY
MR, M'LAREN AND THE "RED FEDS." . Three open-air meetings, in support of Mr. D. JPLaren's candidature for the Mayoralty, were held on Saturday evening at Nowtown, Dixon Street, and Clyde Quay. The candidate submitted that' anyone- aspiring to tho office of Mayor should first have served some apprenticeship in public work. This he had done, having been 12 years op the City Council. His policy was evolutionary and constructive, and. ho was opposed to wild revolutionary destructive methods. He wished to see a. good public market established, and also hot water baths which could, be made to' pay their way; ■ He was astounded to find tlio present Mayor supporting the raising of charges on clubs using ,the public grounds to tho extent of 100 ■'per cent, increase, and at the same time remitting the general rate to the Athletic Park Company, the bowling clubs, and other, private owners of recreation grounds. There was surely a want of policy in faising the charges on some sports bodies and remitting them on others. At Dixon Street Mr. M'Laren was constantly interrupted by a noisv element composed apparently of '"Red Feds. ' Their purpose appeared to be to prevent Mr. M'Laren from speaking.
