THE LAUNCH DISASTER ON THE GRANd CANAL PITIFUL SCENES. By Telttirraph—Prosa Association-Copyright Rome, March 20. • Further particulars concerning the disaster on the Grand Canal, when a torpedo boat collided with and sank a launch, about 50 passengers being drowned, show that tho launch had eighty passengers on boardp. mostly 'women and children. The- torpedo boat was travelling at full speed at tho timo, and tho launch sank in a minute. Tho majority of tho passengers were sheltering in, tho saloon owing to the cold weather, and few had timo to escape. Italian and German bluejackets saved many of those who were struggling in tho water. Whilst lieutenant Bossi was saving a woman, many of tho victims clung to Ws neck and ho was drowned. The city is in mourning. Tho theatres and restaurants aro closed. Those drowned include the captain of the. launch, two English tourists, four sailors of the Kaiser's yacht Hohenssolleru, and three Italian officers. (Rec. March 22, 5.5 p.m.) Rome, March 21. The disaster is attributed to. tho steersman of the launch watching . a hydroplane which was manoeuvring. The-steersman of the torpedo boat haß disappeared.
