RAILWAY APPEALS.

BOARD SITTING AT DWEDIN. ($j tfolecraph.—Press A-asocistioi.) Dunedto, March 19. A sitting of tho Railway Appeal Board was held to-day, Mr. W. It. Haselderi presiding. ■George,Burnett, chief cleric in the District Engineer's Office, Duiisdin, appealed against being superseded' by ,J. Young, who : had , acquired a similar position in Christcliureh, but was lower in the classification list than appellant, in tho appointment of a land offices in the Wellington .office,

Mr. Jatoes Burnett ('Chief Engineer of Railways), Mr. F. W, Maelean {Chief luspasetiiig Engineer), and Mr. Hunter Macandrew (.District Engineer) gave evidence in. favour of appellant.. The Chief EiigM.ieer's report stated that tho appellant Bad been recommended for promotion to Grade 5, ■ and the three ' cagi.aee.rs considered that appellant was .just as well qualified far the WeHingjton position as Young.

Tho Chief Engineer admitted that ho was of opinion that his. relationship to the appellant (they arc brotheii's). had acted fts a bar to appellant's claims as a fond officer' Was immediately under the control of tho Chief Engineer. He agreed that it was perhaps undesirable to have relations Working in the same office. Tlie board reserved its decision. Angus' Cainofon, engine-driver, Duncdi.ii, appealed against being superseded by a junior for the- position of depot charge man. Appellant stated that a locomotive foreman, since superannuated, had informed him {appellant} that he had feeouimeiwlcd him for promotion. Mr, H. Davidson, representing tho Department, read two official reports from the. locotttotivo foreman in ques-' t-ion, who stated that Cameron hadl'not sufficient control of the meu_ when ho was foreman and washer-out in the en-gine-sheds. Two other oflkc-fs of the locomotive department stated that, although appellant was an excellent cngMiOidrlvcr, he was unfitted by his temperament to exorcise a judicious control. ■Decision was reserved.
