THE VISIT OF THE GOVERNOR. , (By. Teleirraph.—Pxoss. 'Association.; 1 New Plymouth, March 18. To-day marked the- first visit of a representative of the King in the Dominion to Parihaka, a historical Native ivillage some thirty miles from Now ! Plymouth, where, during tho troublous jtimos of war, the voices' of To Whiti and Toliu Kakahi were hoard urging the peoplq to bo steadfast to tho Treaty of AVaitaiigi. Tho villago has been the gathering placo of. Natives from all parts of tho North Island for days past. Soino 1200 assembled to-day and received tho visitors. Two thousand Europeans were also present. Tho viceregal party comprised tho Earl and Countess of Liverpool, Dr. Pomare, tho Hon. W. H. Hcrrira, the Hon. W. 6. l< , . Carncross, Mr. H. J. Okcy, M.P.L and Mr. 0. R.. Wilkinson, M.P., Mr. T. W. Msher, and Judgo J. B. Jack, of the JJativo Land Court. At a reception given by Mrs. Pomaro and party tho visitors wero invested with chiefs' mats, tho Maori band playing an anthom. They wero then led to seats'in front of tho lato To Whiti's house and near his grave. Cliarlio Waiatara, : a 'prominent Native, then presented a. picturesqueTy-worded address of -welcome to "Tho Snow-white Crane which flies twico in a life-time." Native.dances- and demonstrations were also carried out, and the Governor delivered an address, Dr. Pomaro iuterpreting. , After a further address by tho Hon. AV. H. Hordes, the official party wore entertained at dinner in the residence,of tho late Te Whiti, the prophet, "and ,a. number of beautiful (liiricgsjnnd'lihkas took" place.' ; •'•■ / After tho 'Governor's departuro ilr. Herrios discussed matters relating to tho Native land laws with tho Maoris.
