He also invented a" devico for replacing derailed steam cars, 1865; patented his air-brake, 1868; applied pneumatic devices to switching and signalling, greatly increasing efficiency; also utilised electricity in this connection, and becamo interested in development of electric machinery; acquired Gaulard and Gibbs's patents, 1835, and succeeded, in spite of great opposition, in introducing tho alternating current system of electric distribution for light and power; made many eleptrio inventions; backed Tesla financially and with shop facilities' in developing tho induction" motor, which made possiblo the utilisation of alternating current for power purposes;'built the first 10 great dynamos'for Niagara,'the dynamos for the elevated and subway roods inNe\v < York, and for the Metropolitan Railway," London.
