The death is announced, at tho ago of 6S, of Mr. George Westinehouse, inventor of the Westinghouso Drake, and one of the biggost manufacturers in the United States. . ' Mr. George •Westinfjliouse achieved world-wide farao by his invention of the nir-brako for use on the railways, but Iβ has various other engineering triumphs to his credit. He invented a rotary engine when he was only 15. He also invented a" devico for replacing derailed steam cars, 1865; patented his air-brake, 1868; applied pneumatic devices to switching and signalling, greatly increasing efficiency; also utilised electricity in this connection, and becamo interested in development of electric machinery; acquired Gaulard and Gibbs's patents, 1835, and succeeded, in spite of great opposition, in introducing tho alternating current system of electric distribution for light and power; made many eleptrio inventions; backed Tesla financially and with shop facilities' in developing tho induction" motor, which made possiblo the utilisation of alternating current for power purposes;'built the first 10 great dynamos'for Niagara,'the dynamos for the elevated and subway roods inNe\v < York, and for the Metropolitan Railway," London. Devised a complete system for controlling natural gns and conveying it throngh pipe lines for long distances, tWeby establishing the practicability of utilising natural eaa as fuel in homes, mille, and factories;. has.. also taken a foremost part in developing eas engines, and in adapting steam turbines to electric "driving.
