COASTWISE LIGHTS.
OPERATIONS IN HAND; KARORI ROCK LIGHT & OTHERS. The Minister' of Marine has received a report from tho Departmental Engineer regarding progress with the erection of certain lights on points on the New Zealand coast. At Karori ltock tho task of preparing the site to receive the concrete foundation of the light tower has been a difficult one. Tho rock cannot be approached in southerly weather, and even in heavy north-west weather work is impossible, and tho prevalence of winds from one or another of these quarters has reduced the working timo to about two days per weok._ Tho surface, which' is very hard in texture, has been- drilled to receive reinforcing rods to strengthen tha concrete. This drilling (very slow work) has been made the more difficult by reason of the fact that parts of the rock have had to be reached by scaffolding, and every bit of scaffolding has had to bo removed at tho end of every day's work., Nothing could be left over-night with any safety. Tho drilling is now nearly all finished, and, if the weather ia moderate, it is hoped that concreting may bo commenced at tho end of the present month. A derrick has been erected on the rock to lift concrete from the boat expeditiously. and on shore a concrete mixerand other* appliances have been set up in Teadiness. Parliament last year voted the necessary money to procure apparatus for converting the lights in tho Nelson-' Ponui Passage from fixed watched lights to automatic lights. The Marine Engineer for the Department has been asked to report as to what power the lights ought to he, and on receipt of his report the'work will be put in hand. Two small lights in the Hauraki Gulf are also under consideration. The erection of a light on Flat Rock, -near Kawau, has been ,deferred • meantime, but it is considered that a. ' light at this point would be of good service to navigation. A . suitable automatic light would cost £350, and the erection of it £100. For the light at Channel Islet, tlie preparation of the site is now in hand, and the apparatus and the tower to carry it are in Auckland, ready for erection. The work, it is expected, will be. finished in about two months' time. ;
