FOOTBALL REPORTS.

RUGBY MATTERS

THE ATHLETIC CLUB'S YEAR.

The thirty-sixth annual report of the Athlotic Football Club states that although tho club did not annex as many championships as in tho two previous years, the season under roview may bo regarded as amongst the most successful years of the club's existence. A great increaao of younger .players was observed, and also . the quality of tho play in all grades was the highest for many..}ears. Each team finished amongst the leaders in its respective grade. .

The senior team was again the most successful in its matches, and won the senior premiership • and the senior seven-a-sido tournament. As both these competitions were won. for the third timo in succession, a unique record has been established. A team of junior players succeeded in winning the Rogors Cup in tho annual eeven-a-side competition promoted by tho Manawatu Rugby Union. Tho junior team maintained tho improvement shown in tho previous year, and numbers amongst its members, many players who will be an acquisition to the senior ranks, in tho • future. Tho committee particularly notes with pleasure the increased enthusiasm displayed by tho tlirtl and fourth grade players in their training; there, is a consequent improvement in their efforts on tho- field.

So many young players were offering last year that it was found necessary to enter two teams in tho fifth grade, in addition to the sixth grade team. The fifth A team were runners-up for the championship, whilst the Fifth B team, although its members were rather inexperienced, made a creditable showing. The sixth-class boys had a fairly euccessful season and set a bright example to their elders by their diligent 'training. ' Tho senior team visited Christchurch during last Easter, and were treattd most hospitably by the Merivale Club. A game between the two. teams resulted in a win for the Athletic team by 14 points to 8. Tho Woodyille Club mot tho junior team at Wellington at tho same time, tho game resulting in tho club's favour by 12 points to 3. Representative. honours wero-gained, by members as follow.: —Now Zealand team to; California, E. Roberts; New Zealand team against Australia, A. Wilson; North Island team, A. Even; sen, R; Pat-on, E. Roberts, and A. Wilson; senior representative teams, H. W. v Adams, W. Bell, J. Cuiraiughamo, A. Evensen, D. W. Madden, J. W. Murphy, E. Osborn, R. Paton, and A. Wilson. Junior representatives: J. Corliss, G. Lvionij.ll. M'Vay, F. Reyline, and. J. Wilton

The best thanks of the club are due to Mr. W. J. Spencer for his training and coaching of the senior and junior players. The cliib is also indebted to Mr; .0. Poiiman for his many efforts on. the. club's behalf during the past year. . : The annual meeting will bo held on Friday evening.

SELWYN CLUB. A fairly successful year, financially and otherwise, is recorded by tho Selwjn Football Club in its annual report. The club membership now stands at 51 active aiicl- 22 honorary .members. Tho conduct of tho members on and off the field has .bean.excellent..-, Duringtlie season, Mr. if." Biick was , -elected to the Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union, and Mr. L. Flowers was appointed a member of tho junior- representation selection I committee..- The following, is a result of tho. teams in the various competitions.:—,, ' ,-■ . .. ' '

junior team: Played thirteen matches, won ten,.lost 2, and drew one. Scored. 124 points against 23. Shot ceoded in gaining eecond place in tho junior championship. Five members of this team, viz., Messrs, It. Macdonald, N. M'Phoo, Frank Cooper, AV. King, and-W.-Roberts gained representative honours.

Third team: This team was not quito as successful as would bo desire*!, eight matches having been' played, oiit of which two were won, five lost, and one was drawn, and tho points scored wero 23 for and 48 against. Tho reason for this team's poor showing was on. account .of its becoming disorganised through a number of its players being injured, and others being called upon to fill vacancies in the junior team through.members of that team becoming incapacitated. , • ~ Fifth-cjass team: This team was an addition to the club, and though its record, with eight matches lost out of eleven played, docs not seem very brilliant, it must bo taken into consideration that the team was the smallest physically in the competition, and also that a number of its .players wero new hands at tho game. Tho thanks of tho club are-duo to Messrs. H. Murray, V. Flack, and Frank Cooper for the manner in ■ v/hich ' they coachod this team. Teams wero also entered for the Wellington and Christchurch seven-a-sido tournaments, and they gave very creditable performances. Trophies wero awarded as follow:— M. N. Austin's (junior), A. Dβ Clifton's (junior), Mr. P. Geoghan's, 11. Easton's (third-class), and Mr. \\. Hornig's (2), O. Beck, and ' Watson (fifth-class). The thanke of tho club are duo to Messrs. N. Austin, jun.,»H. Card, P. Colo, L. Larking, J. M'Guire, W. Barnes, J. O. Fajilknor. J. Flack, J. Cooper, C. Burnett, R. P. Roberts, P. Geoghaii, and W. Hornig for donations and trophies, and also to Messrs. W. Roborts, F. Cooper, and H. Buck for use of rooms for meetings. Tliore is somo talk amongst tho members as to the advisability of enterms a team in tho senior eonvoctition this coming season, and no doubt this matter will ho fully discussed at* tho annual meeting.

MELROSE CLUB. Tlio twenty-seventh annual icnort of tlie Molrosp Football Club, to be presented at thn animal meeting on Tuesday next, states that during the season 1913 'the club ■ had fjvo teams entered in the championships, viz.. senior, junior, third, fourth, and fifth "ratios.. Tho fact that durinfz the previous season tho club was only.in n position to enter three teams Roes to show that it is coming back to its old strength in membership. "The season ended (continues the report) not so' successful as tho committee would liavo desired, but nevertheless it was a most enjoyable, one, the tmily thing that marred it being the number of minor accidents to members. The senior team did not play up to expectations. After i'. o first round of (rood football shown by them sortie members forgot that tliev 1-nd a duty to perform in training—the most necessary tiling in football. After beating Athletic some were Quite content to eiid tlleir training. The junior and third teams did not hive a very successful season as regards liins, but must of tho players were keen on the. game. The fourth and'fifth teams were strong-combinations, arid each lied as runneis-up in their rospectivo grades. This indicates that tiiere aro good players coming on. '

"The following nieinbars ■.epresented 'Wellington in the roDroseiuativo niateTies: —D. Sullivan. J. Twomoy, R. Oakes, W. Sullivan, A. GiK-titl=t, and R. Capnor.
