The lieutenant's papers included a letter from the chief of a foreign espioriage bureau, directing him to receive letters from Eedl, and also a cipher. This was used for a telegram summoning Redl from Prague to Vienna. Eedl immediately went, detectives following hiin. Eedl is said to have received .£IO,OOO for his previous winter's spy work. Throughout the Balkan crisis he bad enabled Russia to reply to the movements of the Austrian forces. In fact,_ the Russian movements sometimes aiticipated the Austrian plans.
